Where can I get good information on how to read engineers site plans?

Hi…I am a urban planner and I recently took a job where I am having to read engineers site plans. In my last job I only had to read basic plans and pick up things like the measurements or heights of plots or subdivisions. Now they are asking me to take the engineering plan and read and understand it…..everything on it like sewage, storm drains etc….but I don’t know all the symbols, abbreviations or codes. Is there a website or a textbook 101 that would be a good starter for me to get up to speed? Help!

Get a basic drafing text book, I think most of the symbols are in it. But let me check, and see what we use here at work.

(I am an enginner) My favorite symbol can you guess??

Take a look at the site below. Or type in Google search Engineering Plans

Look up on half.com: Civil Drafting Technology Its a really good book that I used as an estimator at a construction company.

You really need to take a University Extension Course to really get the full picture. I would at least look at university websites to see what they have on-line or on CD. At worse, call them and find out what books they use and buy them.
