What is the sewage smell in my bathrooms?

sewage smell

In the last few days I have been getting a smell like sewage when I walk past our bathroom. I have cleaned the toilet inside and out. What could it be?

The drains or the sump. You have an accumulation of gunge somewhere, put some bleach down the sump holes.

your vent pipe may be blocked… it’s on the roof….

do you have a shower there that you don’t use often?… put water in the drain… if it’s dried out, sewer gas can get thru….

check the floor around the base of the toilet… is the toilet sitting tight?.. or will it rock…?… might need to lift and replace the wax ring to seal out the smells….

scrub the floor there, too…. especially if there’s little boys using it, they sometime ‘miss’….

clean out the hair traps on both sink and tub drains… icky stuff can grow there….

There are some water in your toilet pan which prevents back flow of sewage gas. Check it.

sounds like sewer gas. Normally this is caused by the p-trap not holding water, allowing the gas to come back up from the sewer. Is there an unused tub or shower which might have gone dry?

Commercial buildings with floor-drains have to have water added occasionally to prevent this from happening. Good luck.

Wax ring under toilet is corrupted. This will let gas from the sewer line into your bathroom.
If your not sure you could “seal” all around the toilet with wet toilet paper, and also the bolt holes if their not covered good. Then air out the bathroom, and then come back in a bit and see if it doesn’t smell a little fresher. if it does, then you can be pretty sure it’s the wax ring.
