When you flush the toilet, the discharge travels though pipes buried in the ground, usually by gravity, to a sewage disposal plant that treats the waste in a number of ways and then discharges the fairly clean water to an outfall us ally in a river or bay. You are paying for this system and its operation.

On my bill they base the cost of the sewer on my water usage. The sewer costs the same as the water. My parents’ village just had a sewer system installed and they had to pay $3000 to hook up and until there plant gets established and the initial cost is taken care of they pay 10 to 15 dollars more for sewage than for water.

Anytime you go to the restroom, take a shower, wash a load of clothes, or use the sink, you are using sewer service. It connects to various size pipes, some are gravity based while others are what they call force mains. It takes all your waste and using gravity and pumps funnels it to a central collection point where it is treated and hopefully properly disposed of. These systems are expensive to install and maintain, but in the long run are far better than septic tanks as they can handle far greater volume.

The only way to reduce the sewer bill is to reduce your water usage. There is no “sewer meter” so they judge your sewer usage based on the incoming water usage since a vast majority of the water used in a household ends up in the sewer through showers, toilets, sinks and washing machines.
