There is a smell coming from the sewage pipe in my basement. What should I do?

sewage pipe

When we bought the house, we had this pipe scoped (a plumber used a camera scope to make sure nothing was obstructing the sewage line).

In the past few months, I have noticed a weird, kinda gassy/garbage smell, leaking through the pipe. We have a finished basment and there is an outlet that can be opened. This is where the smell is coming from. It comes and goes. Any ideas what is causing this and what I should do?

Chances are the smell is coming from one or more floor drains in your basement. The have traps in them that hold water, and seal sewer gasses from entering your house. They have probably dried out.

Pour 1/2 pail of water down each drain and I bet the smell goes away. You should do this regularly to avoid the sewer gasses.

Call another plumber, it could be sewer gas and that can kill you. (atleast that’s what my dad says, i believe it)
