Summary of drains set up

Local building laws and processes have to be complied with whenever you carry out sewage or pipework repairs and installation by yourself.

You need to explain your work plan in detail to the authority if you wish to install a new sewage system or alter an existing one, the officials will then go through the plan to check if it is in accordance with the rules. However you don’t need to inform them if you are just replacing some damaged parts.

The water which you see on the surface is basically rainwater. An earlier method was to directly discharge this surface water into the sewage drains, but modern homes use a surface water sewer or watercourse or soakaway to drain or absorb rainwater. To stop any nasty odours emanating from the drains a combined system will discharge the surface water into the foul water drains by way of the gully traps. However, the latest systems are designed in a way which separates the foul water and the surface water. To comply with modern planning rules you should always make sure that the foul water and surface water sewage system do not connect. If you are unsure about the drainage system around your house get advice from the Building Control Department before you start any work.

To properly prepare the plans and get local authority permission to commence work there is a need for you to plan the route of the waste pipes before you begin. The main things to consider when planning the route of a waste or soil pipe are to keep the route as straight and short as you can. You should not make your pipe runs very steep although some gradient is necessary. You can calculate the fall of a drain over a distance using a surveyors site level. In the absence of one of these, create a datum point and set levels with a hosepipe filled with water and compute the fall from the datum in this manner.

You need to ascertain that the foundations and structure of the house is safe when digging to install your drain ditch. Similarly, take care of the foundations when laying a waste pipe that runs alongside the home.

While installing a new sewage system make sure that you do not dig too long before laying the pipe. Excavate a part of the sewage system, install and test the pipework, and then back fill and compact the earth before moving on to the next part.

The trench may need to be supported depending on the depth and soil conditions. It is advisable to take proper precautions. It is better to provide support to the ditch walls than allowing the trench to collapse. The trench should be narrow, but spacious enough for people to work with any required tools. Protruding stones or bricks should not be left in the base and it should be cleaned to provide a smooth, regular surface. The base should be good so you may need to import material if the existing soil structuire is not up to the mark.

Pipework must be uniformly supported by the soil bed, and not by stones or bricks haphazardly placed underneath the pipes. This should not be used as employing this type of material as a temporary or permanent pipe support will damage the pipe. The material used for bedding should be firmly compacted down with a depression created to allow the joints in the pipes to fit easily. The entire drain pipe system has to be uniformly supported by the soil bedding.

The drainage system should be designed in a way that pipework remains accessible to drain rods should drainage maintenance work be required. This need for drain rod access can be easily achieved by keeping the pipeline straight and in short sections. Always make sure that rodding access is allowed in an inspection chamber at any point where the direction of the pipework changes.

Keeping these points in mind, you can carry out your own sewage and plumbing work smoothly and almost professionally.
