You can just cut the root under the sewer line which gets in the way. I have done this in my sewer line and it did not damage the tree.

It’s easy enough to get the roots out of the line. All you have to do is run a drain snake with a cutter blade on it. But the real problem is that if there are roots in the drain, then your drain is broken or cracked and needs to be replaced. When you have the snake run, measure out how much cable went down the drain before hitting the roots and that will tell you pretty much where the break is.

a drain cleaning service can probably get the roots out but, without replacing the old probably clay sewer or removing the tree. It will become an ongoing problem. The tree roots will grow towards the water source, if it’s leaking, thats where they will go.

There are companies that specialize in running a cutter down the pipe, but it will like need to be done every couple of years unless you replace the pipe
