Could I have a root problem in my sewage pipes?

sewage problems

I live in an older home. Our sewage has been running slowly for a few months now. Sump pumps were placed under the house in October due to excess water sitting under the house. We did not have any problems with the pipes prior to this. Could roots have possibly made their way to the pipes in search for water? How much could a major repair like this cost me? My husband recently left for premobilization training before heading to Iraq. Naturally since he left, anything that can go wrong has, I’m always aware of being taken advantage of when it comes to home repairs, especially if it is known I am the primary caretaker of the house now.

Roots could be a factor; older houses often have terra cotta pipes or similar “soft” material covered with a pitch/tar-like coating. As they age and roots push through the ground, the pipes crack. Eventually, the waste water won’t flow at all. Depending on how far the run is from the house to the sewer/septic, it could be a few hundred or a few thousand dollars. I had mine replaced in mid-90s on a run of about 75 feet. It was $2000 or so as I recall. Get several estimates, but only after that is determined to be the problem. Then, make them show you where the intrusion is when they begin digging to remove old pipe.

I had this type of problem. The plumbers came over with a mini TV camera and sent it through to discover the damage. It beat digging everything up until we knew where the damage was.

Well don’t tell the serviceman you are primary. Call a roto-rooter company, they will run a snake down the drain and you troubles will be gone.

P.S. I appreciate people who make this country a great place to live. I honor your husband and you for all you do to make the USA the greatest country on earth. Again Thank You.

There are companies who put a camera in the pipe and see whats going on. Some on needs to figure out why sump pumps are necessary? Ground water or is it seepage?

Buy a product named:”RID-X” put it in your toilet once a month, it will cut thru the roots and eat them and break down the waste.
It costs about $6.00 or so, Use it once a month in your toilet only and you won’t have any problems ever. it’s the cheapest way to go.
A major repair about $10,000 depending what is wrong.
Do you have a septic tank?, if so Have it pumpd out. It could be close to full. Never plant tree closer than 20 feet from your house. Some trees have roots that will rapidly spread to your nearest water supply and can destroy your pipes. Don’t let anyone taken advantage of you.

Not much detail to go on. Do you have city sewer or your own septic tank? If city then you most likely have drain pipe problem. Could be roots or grease build up or a toy in the pipe. My kids flushed a towel one time… The cost to find the damage and repair is directly related to where you live, and the type of repair you need. If I were you, (I’m not), I would have a plumber run a camera down the drain to find out the actual problem and the location, then go from there.
